RC transfer in India: a clear guide for buyers and sellers

Understand RC transfer responsibilities, common documents and follow-up steps for safer used-car buying and selling in India.

Why transfer matters

Until the registration is formally transferred, the recorded owner can remain connected to notices, taxes or incidents involving the vehicle. Both parties should treat transfer completion as part of the transaction, not optional paperwork.

Prepare the transaction record

Requirements vary by state and situation, but commonly include the original RC, insurance, pollution certificate, identity and address documents, signed transfer forms and proof of sale. Interstate sales can require additional NOC and tax steps.

Protect both sides

Record the handover date and time, payment, odometer and condition in a signed delivery note. Keep copies of submitted forms and acknowledgements. Never rely only on a verbal promise that transfer will happen later.

Track completion

Use the official Parivahan or relevant state transport service to follow the application. If a dealer coordinates the process, ask for the reference and final updated record. Requirements should always be confirmed with the applicable RTO.

Important: Vehicle condition, finance and RTO requirements vary. Verify the specific car, lender terms and applicable government process before committing.
